What is counselling?

Counselling gives you the opportunity to explore areas of your life or yourself, which do not seem to be working well for you, in a safe and contained way. As your counsellor, my role is not to judge you or to make assumptions about you but it is to be explicit about the judgements and assumptions you seem to make about yourself. We will try to make explicit the thoughts, feelings, assumptions and values which have previously been implicit so that we can look at them afresh and make decisions about what changes you wish to make.

What can you expect?

Sessions last for 50 minutes and are normally held weekly at the same time and place. What we talk about is confidential although there are a few exceptions to this which I would talk through with you in the initial session. Counselling can be long or short term but either way, I would review the work regularly with you.
